Choosing a first dance class can raise practical questions:

  • What will my child do?
  • Do I stay in the room?
  • What should they wear?
  • Will they need previous experience?
  • Is ballet suitable for a toddler?

At Viv’Art Movement Academy, Preschool Ballet is for children aged 2.5–4. Classes introduce movement, music and early ballet in a calm, playful and welcoming setting.

No previous dance experience is required.

What happens in a Preschool Ballet class?

A Preschool Ballet class is designed to feel safe, positive and easy to join. At this age, the main focus is helping children feel comfortable in the space, connect with the teacher and enjoy moving to music.

Some children join in straight away. Others prefer to watch first. Both responses are normal. With time, familiarity and encouragement, children often grow in confidence at their own pace.

Parents and carers can expect a warm environment where young children are supported as they settle into a new activity.

What the experience is like

Preschool Ballet classes are kept age-appropriate, welcoming and structured in a way that helps young children feel secure.

Families can expect:

  • A friendly teacher
  • A clear and supportive environment
  • Music and movement suited to young children
  • Gentle encouragement
  • Space for children to observe before joining
  • A positive first introduction to dance

At this stage, the goal is not perfect technique or performance. The goal is to help each child enjoy movement, feel included and build trust in the class environment.

Do parents and grown-ups join the class?

Yes. At this stage, parents and carers should expect to stay in the room or remain very close, especially during the first sessions.

Some children are ready to join in straight away. Others feel more secure with a familiar grown-up nearby. Both are normal.

Your presence can help your child feel safe while they get used to the teacher, the music and the space. As confidence grows, many children begin to participate more freely in their own time.

There is no set timeline for settling in. The priority is a happy and reassuring first experience, not immediate independence.

What will my child learn?

Preschool Ballet supports early physical, social and creative development.

Confidence

Children become more comfortable in a new space, with a new teacher and alongside other children.

Coordination

Regular movement helps children develop body awareness, balance and control over time.

Listening skills

Children begin to respond to music, guidance and simple cues in a group setting.

Social skills

Classes help children get used to shared space, group participation and learning alongside others.

Creativity

Movement and music give children room to explore, express themselves and enjoy being imaginative.

Love of movement

A positive early experience can help children build a lasting connection with dance, music and self-expression.

The aim is not to create a perfect performance. The aim is to help each child feel happy, secure and confident in movement.

What should my child wear?

For Preschool Ballet, children should wear clothing that allows free movement.

Viv’Art’s current guidance recommends:

  • Pink or white Bloch Sparkle Full Sole Ballet Shoes
  • Socks that match the shoes
  • Comfortable dancewear
  • Hair secured away from the face
  • Layers for arrival and departure

Ballet shoes and tights can be ordered through Miss Nina. See the Viv’Art uniform guidance for current information.

For the first class, children can wear comfortable clothes if their uniform is not ready. Avoid clothing that restricts movement or shoes with hard soles.

Also bring:

  • A labelled water bottle
  • Any required medication
  • A spare layer
  • A small comfort item, if needed
  • Your child’s ballet shoes, if available

Avoid bringing toys into the studio unless the teacher has requested a prop.

Where can children attend Preschool Ballet?

Viv’Art offers Preschool Ballet at the Isle of Dogs studio in London.

The Isle of Dogs location is:

George Green’s School
100 Manchester Road
London E14 3DW

There is also a new Friday morning Preschool Ballet class at The Exchange, Erith, held in the North Room. This class is also open to the homeschooling community.

Check the current timetable for class times and availability.

Who teaches the classes?

Our early-years teaching team includes:

  • Miss Anita
  • Miss Kate
  • Kofi
  • Mallory

Each teacher brings their own approach while following the same purpose: create a safe, welcoming and encouraging first experience of dance.

Is Preschool Ballet suitable for my child?

Preschool Ballet may suit your child if they:

  • Are aged 2.5–4
  • Enjoy music or movement
  • Are ready to explore a group activity
  • Have not attended dance before
  • Need support entering a new class
  • Enjoy imaginative play
  • Are interested in trying ballet

Your child does not need to be flexible, coordinated or confident before starting. These skills develop through regular participation.

If you are comparing toddler dance classes London families can access, look for a class that matches your child’s age, feels welcoming and offers clear support for both children and grown-ups.
